Pismo Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the central coast. It's estimated poupulation wsas 7,931 in 2014. It is part of the Five Cities Area, a cluster of cities in San Luis Obispo County. According to the census, it has a total area of 13.5 sq. miles, with 9.9 sq miles being land. The southern end of Pismo Beach runs alongside sand dunes, which are followed by eucaluptus trees, which attract thousands of migrating monarch butterflies in the months between November and February. The downtown area of Pismo Beach is right along the beach, and has many hotels, shops, restaurants parks and tourist attractions. The northern end of Pismo Beach is popularly referred to as "Shell Beach." Although part of Pismo Beach, it is more residential, less "touristy" and has some amazing homes with views, mixed in with charming beach bungalows and cute little houses with a historic feel.
